Stephen Curtis Captured!

"Fighting Joe" Hooker had an almost successful effort to surprise General Lee's forces at Chancellorsville. Brigadier Generals Imboden and Jones' forces had been ordered by Lee to disable the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Lines. This was called the Jones-Imboden Raid and covered 400 miles in 37 days. After fighting a brisk engagement at Beverly, WV on April 30th, troops entered and occupied Buckhannon in Upshur County.

From 1863-1865 Willis H. Woodley served Upshur County as a delegate in the Confederate General Assembly. John Brannon served as a Senator for Lewis and Upshur Counties from 1861-1865.

Camp Chase was a major Union prisoner of war internment center at Columbus, Ohio. There are only two surviving registers of Confederate prisoners at Camp Chase. Most of the prisoners were captured in West Virginia or Kentucky. Not all were soldiers. Images for these can be viewed at familysearch.org and more information on Camp Chase and West Virginia and the Confederacy can be found here.

Stephen Curtis was evidently captured prior to one of the final battles in the area. He was captured in Upshur County, WV on 20 April 1863 and classified as a rebel/confederate sympathizer. He was a listed as a citizen and not affiliated with the Confederate forces. The following record can be found in the Camp Chase vol. 53 1863-1865 on image #44:

CW Stephen Curtis

He was released on 17 Jun 1863 based on his taking the oath of office.
